Lake Kopais: A Monument of Nature and Modern History
The Bay of Skroponeria (or Skorponeria) is the Municipality of Orchomenus’ access to the sea, the North Euboean Gulf. It lies 14 kilometers northeast of Akraifnio and 88 kilometers from Athens. Paralimni Lake and Mount Ptoon are to the south of the bay. At the entrance of the bay, there is a small rocky islet called Glaronisi or Gatza. In ancient times, it was known as the "Phocaean Bay."
The easternmost part of the bay belongs to the Municipality of Chalkida (Euboea regional unit), while the westernmost part, including the fishing village at the bay’s end, falls within the Local Community of Kokkino, in the Municipality of Orchomenus (Boeotia regional unit). Due to its relatively challenging road access, the bay has preserved its natural beauty, and the landscape is enchanting. It is ideal for water sports, swimming at pristine and tranquil beaches, and fishing.
At the far end of the bay (within the Municipality of Orchomenus), there is a small tavern offering a variety of options. You can enjoy fresh fish, grilled dishes, or relax with a drink or coffee after your swim.
