Kastro is located on the northeastern side of the Copais plain. The village was called Topolia until 1953, when it was renamed Kastro due to the presence of the Mycenaean acropolis of Gla near the settlement. Close to Kastro was also the ancient Boeotian city of Copes, which gave its name to Lake Copais. Together with the settlement of Stroviki, Kastro forms the Municipal Community of Kastro, a unit characterized by significant agricultural production and traditional livestock farming. The patron saint of the village is Prophet Elias.
