Dionysos is located north of the Copais plain and the town of Orchomenus, with a population of 572 as of the 2011 census. The settlement, originally called Tzamali, was officially recorded as part of the Municipality of Orchomenus at the end of the 19th century. It was founded and inhabited by the Sarakatsani, a traditionally nomadic group that spent winters in this area and migrated to mountain pastures in the spring. Over time, as they shifted to farming, they settled permanently, creating a modern village with significant agricultural production and traditional livestock farming.
In 1955, Tzamali was renamed Dionysos, as the residents believed that the remnants of statue bases found south of the settlement, carved into the rock, belonged to a temple dedicated to the god Dionysus. However, it has since been proven that the temple was dedicated to Heracles. The patron saint of the village is Saint Seraphim of Domvous, a Boeotian saint and protector of farmers.
