Lake Kopais: A Monument of Nature and Modern History
On the northern slopes of the Hyphanteion Hill, at the northwestern edge of Orchomenus, north of the Tomb of Minyas, west of the Panagia Skripou, and below the chapel of Saints Anargyroi, lies the Akidalia Spring of Aphrodite, also known as the Spring of the Graces (locally referred to as "Karkari"). It is situated in a location rich in natural beauty, surrounded with legends and
myths.
In ancient times, the people of Orchomenus descended to this spring via a staircase carved into the rock, as the waters of Lake Copais extended to this point.
According to Greek mythology, the daughters of Zeus and Eurynome, the three Graces who accompanied the goddess Aphrodite, were born here: Aglaia (radiance), Euphrosyne (joy of the soul), and Thalia (blooming plants).
The Graces bathed their alabaster bodies in the cool waters of the Akidalia Spring. As Homer mentions in the Iliad, at this very spring, the Graces bathed Aphrodite, perfumed her, and dressed her in the "ambrosial robe" they had woven themselves.
Visitors can reach the Akidalia Spring by taking the pedestrian path that starts directly opposite the church of Panagia Skripou. In just 250 meters, they will arrive at the spring. From there, they can continue along the pathway next to the springs of the Melanas River (Mavropotamos), surrounded by lush greenery and extraordinary natural beauty. At many points, crystal-clear, ice-cold water
emerges directly from the rock.
After 500 meters, they will encounter the first fish farm and smoked trout production facility (more details on this topic). A little further down (200 meters), visitors can rest in the courtyard of the picturesque church of Zoodochos Pigi, by the river.
Continuing another 100 meters or so, they will find the refreshment stand constructed by the Municipality. In this charming environment, they can enjoy refreshments, coffee, drinks, and delicious snacks. Beyond the refreshment stand, 200 meters further, visitors will reach a beautiful area with crystal-clear waters. This spot, known locally as "The Springs", has been a favorite location for nearby excursions, such as on May Day.
Finally, by following the path alongside the river for another 500 meters, they will come across a second fish farm and production unit of the Orchomenus smoked trout, renowned throughout Europe.
This delightful route can be enjoyed on foot or by car, offering an unforgettable experience of nature and local culture.
