Municipal District of Kokkino

Kokkino is a village in the Municipality of Orchomenus, built on the northern slopes of Mount Ptoon (or Mount Pelagia) at an altitude of 260 meters. Together with the villages of Agios Ioannis, Skroponeria, and Moni Pelagias, it forms the Local Community of Kokkino. According to some sources, the village was first inhabited around 1400, possibly even earlier, likely by Arvanite tribes. The village was originally called Kokkinat, which means "red" in Arvanitika, derived from the red soil that characterizes the area to this day, due to its high bauxite content. During the Ottoman period, the village belonged to the Voivode of Martino. A large portion of the population is employed by the nearby LARCO mining industry, as well as in agriculture and livestock farming. The patron saint of the village is the Holy Trinity.
